BOSTON, MA, APRIL 16, 2015 – On Monday, April 20, 2015, three runners in the Boston Marathon raced to help end global poverty and support the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), which is honored to be a partner charity again this year. Inspired by a belief in our shared humanity to help end poverty, the Foundation is dedicated to helping communities in Asia and Africa improve their quality of life. The AKF Run Team members embody that commitment as they prepare to run 26.2 miles through Boston’s streets.
All three members of the AKF Run Team are passionate about finding solutions and building meaningful change. Two of them are New Englanders; one hails from Kenya. Danielle Healy, Jessica Reynolds and Catherine Kabui have exceeded their fundraising targets, raising over $30,000 collectively for AKF projects in Africa and Asia. Learn more about each runner from their blogs here.
We are thrilled by the dedication of these three women, all nurses, to end global poverty and the inspiration they take from our community partners creating a better future together. Just as the Boston Marathon is a chance to celebrate a united community, the AKF Run Team is celebrating what unites communities from Boston to East Africa and Central Asia.
Here are our runners who have raised over $30,000 for programs that help people in some of the most difficult parts of Africa and Asia:
- Danielle Healy, of Plymouth, MA, has a personal goal of going overseas to help children. She is proud to raise funds for programs that ensure people receive proper healthcare. Read her blog.
- Catherine Kabui, originally from Kenya, knows the Foundation from its work in her home country, in education and health. She volunteered to join the team and run for AKF after already qualifying for the Marathon, inspired by the mission of helping others and the lesson of empowerment that running has shown her. - Jessica Reynolds, comes from four generations of New Hampshire runners and has always dreamt of running the Boston marathon. She is honored to run for an organization that works hand in hand with local communities to build a better future together. Read her blog.
Nargis Solis, volunteer coach for the team and a two-time Iron Man competitor herself, is proud of the whole team.
All three will be racing to raise the most funds possible, because these programs make a difference in people’s lives.
