Washington, D.C., October 18, 2024 — The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) USA is excited to announce the appointment of Muneerah Merchant as its new CEO, ushering in a new phase for the organization as we continue to partner with communities in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to build better futures together.
“After a rigorous search, we are proud to have Muneerah take the helm of AKF USA,” said Nageeb Sumar, AKF USA’s National Committee Chair. “Muneerah’s experience, knowledge, and reputation will be a tremendous asset to the organization as it deepens its engagement in regions of Asia and Africa facing unprecedented challenges.”
“We are grateful to Khalil Z. Shariff, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation Canada, and his team who have provided invaluable support and guidance in the interim,” Mr. Sumar added.
Michael Kocher, General Manager for Aga Khan Foundation, shared his enthusiasm: “AKF USA is an important part of the Aga Khan Foundation’s global system, and I am confident that Muneerah will be able to continue to expand the important work undertaken by AKF USA in forming partnerships and developing resources for AKF’s work with marginalized communities throughout South and Central Asia and East Africa.”
Muneerah expressed her excitement about taking on this new role. “I am delighted to be joining AKF USA at this moment of change. The organization is a recognized leader in global development, thanks to its farsighted and inspirational leadership, dedicated volunteers, and diverse partners. I feel confident that together we can advance our mission of improving the lives and livelihoods of the millions of people we serve. I’m especially keen to work with our partners to support various quality of life initiatives including education, economic development, health, food security, and climate change.”
Muneerah brings a wealth of experience in the not-for-profit sector, having most recently served as Chief of Advancement and Partnerships at the Children’s Health Council in Palo Alto, California. Her impressive background also includes roles as Vice President of Philanthropy at Khan Academy, Director of Advancement at The Nueva School, and Executive Director of Palo Alto Partners in Education.
Before transitioning to the not-for-profit field, Muneerah excelled in management consulting with The Parthenon Group (now EY-Parthenon) and Price Waterhouse (now PwC).
She holds a BA in Math and Electrical Engineering from Smith College, an MSc in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
